Giving back to our community

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

Here at Neko Neko, we thrive on our community support. Without our loyal customers and the love of all things soft serve and taiyaki, we know we would not be as successful as we are today.

As we brainstormed how we can give back, we thought about who we impact the most. And that was an easy answer. There's no joy like seeing a kid's face light up after they've received their first taiyaki fish cone with a vanilla and pineapple soft serve swirl topped with fruity pebbles. We see so many families coming in after school, on a day off, during the weekends, during every holiday, and we are so grateful that you've chosen to spend time with us! Our vision is to bring a little glimpse of happiness to all of our customers. And every person who has chosen to come to Neko Neko for a small treat has helped us bring that vision to life. We can't thank you enough.

The Fall in New Mexico is a unique and wonderful time. We have the state fair in September, the Balloon Fiesta in October, Dia de Los Muertos, and other traditions for the holiday season. But we know that this time of year is not always the happiest or easiest, so we've teamed up with The Grief Center of New Mexico to help raise awareness of the challenges that some children will face during this time.

November is National Children's Grief Awareness month. 1 in 8 or 59,000 children in New Mexico will experience the death of a parent or sibling before they turn 18yrs old. This is heartbreaking statistics. To know that a child must grieve so early on in life and to learn how our state has one of the highest rankings nationally is heavy news.

The Grief Center of New Mexico is a local, non-profit organization that offers FREE support groups for children and adults ages 3yrs and up. Located right here in Albuquerque, they operate with mainly volunteers who help facilitate these support groups. Every volunteer facilitator goes through extensive training to best serve the members. The Grief Center is the only of its kind here in NM, and they offer age specific bereavement services. So if you have a young child or teenager, they will be grouped with people their same age. They can share their experiences and learn healthy coping skills and be on their way to healing.

For the entire month of November, Neko Neko will donate 10% of all of our Ube sales to The Grief Center.. Ube is by far one of our most popular flavors and The Grief Center's color theme is purple, so we knew this was a perfect pairing. Come by for some Ube soft serve and support the children of NM who are going through a difficult time.

There is great work happening at The Grief Center, and we know we made a great choice to work with them. To find our more information, visit www.griefnm.org or call (505) 323-0478 to schedule a tour. Follow them on Facebook or Instagram to stay up to date. They have an incredible amount of online resources, free work shops, fundraisers, events throughout the state, and volunteer or professional opportunities.

We hope you all can help us spread a little bit of joy and support for our community.

See you soon!
